OK. Confession time. Part of the reason I was Missing In Action for so long was because I was also on vacation recently. And yes, I was up in the mountains seeking for my muse, my inspiration and another triumphant tale to tell.
Three years ago in May, a group of friends and I climbed Mount Kinabalu via Timpohon Gate, and we (the whole group) emerged triumphant.
A week plus ago, another group of friends and I climbed the mountain again, this time via Mersilau Trail. And this group too made it to the top!
Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, @ 4,095m! Three years might have passed, but the beauty of the mountain has not changed. Below are pictures from both occassions.

hi there..i got to know that u have climbed mount KK from both the timpohon n mersilau trail. i will be flying tomolo morning (21/3/2007) n heads up to the mountain the day after..as i am a inexperience n first time climber, i have no idea what to expect and would like to seek ur opinion as to which trail is more difficult and any recommendation on where should i start? timpohon or mersilau?
btw the pics are magnificient..i wish to see the beauty up there too..;)
Hi smun,
Welcome to my blog. And thanks. It's because the landscape is beautiful that my pix are beautiful. Hahaha ...
Why not climb up through Mersilau and down through Timpohon? Mersilau is an easier but longer climb as the inclines are not as steep as Timpohon. Going down through Timphon can be quite a "killer" to your knees but by then, most people would just want to get down in the shortest time.
If you exercise or play games regularly, the climb should be ok either through Mersilau or Timpohon. Start early i.e. latest 8.30am so that you can reach Laban Rata in plenty of time for a good rest before the night climb to the peak.
Good luck and have fun. Mt Kinabalu is a wonderful place. After having done twice, I don't mind doing it another time.
Cheers!
Hi there,
thanks for ur reply. i got to read it juz in time before i fly off and am back now..;) took the mersilau trail up n down using timpohon trail..the overall climbing is alrite and a lil tiring but… a big dissapointment hits me when theres no sunrise up the lows peak after all the climbing!! the weather isnt too good and too foggy to see anything. Imagining that I cant even see the opposite peak when I was up there. the bright side is..I think it’s a great experience I have had there with a great bunch of ppl who all manage to be up there..
cheers and thanks again..;)
Hey Smun,
Thanks for the update. It's a pity you didn't get to see the sunrise. Guess that's the luck of the draw. In any case, you can always climb again.
Call me crazy but I do intend to climb Mt Kinabalu again. :)
Cheerios!
I didn't see the sunrise too back last September. We took far too long to climb up that morning on an almost empty fuel tank.
Hated the climb down from Laban Rata. Had two badly bruised big toe nails and had to lose those. I thought only prisoners with their rights violated are subjected to this kind of touture.
